Switching from PA to Alliance ROM

Hi

I have a few queries when I am trying to make the switch:

1. The Alliance ROM thread says I have to go back to stock using ODIN and then start from there..

is this what is required? I was just wondering if the thread hasnt been updated after JB came in so wanted to clarify

Can I directly flash the new ROM from CWM since I am already on a safe kernel?

2. I have downloaded all drivers, odin stock roms etc. The problem I am facing is my device is not showing up in ODIN (normal connection in USB not download mode) by turning yellow...I have tried to install the drivers again and installed Kies as well..
- From what I remember from last time, it should turn yellow in Odin before I go to the download mode. Is that right?
- My device is recognized as an MTP device and it shows as GT-N7000 in my computer
- What is the sequence of things? Should I switch to download mode and then connect the phone to computer or vice versa?
- Is there any safe way of getting out of download mode? Once I connect the phone in download mode, how do I abort the process and restart it?

I have some more doubts but I think I will improve my knowledge from above answers and see if they are still not clarified.
